Big and Beautiful vs. Frail and Fair
Believe it or not, trying to lose weight can give you a lot of enemies. There are the friends who actually try to sabotage you, as described in an earlier post. There are people who think that if you want to lose weight you're a brainwashed dope who gives in to society's beauty standards and you should be ashamed for that. There are people who demonize every diet out there, telling you how you might as well never even try. It's bad enough you have to be judged for being overweight, now you have to be judged for trying to change?
Here is one solid truth: BEING FAT IS NOT HEALTHY!
Ask any doctor, ask any nutritionist, read any health book, visit any health website.
Of course, you can argue about the definition of "fat." Some women who are 5'8" and 130 lbs would think of themselves as fat, and some women at 5'2" and 180 lbs would think of themselves as perfect. There is one sure way to find out if your opinion is legit: GO TO THE DOCTOR. If a doctor actually tells you that you're overweight, you should listen. Your doctor is not a modeling agent. Your doctor is an expert of health. Your doctor likely became a doctor to help you and people like you. They're not out to get you!
Some people argue that doctors ignore the needs of the overweight, and that is sometimes a legit claim. However, most people don't realize the full implications of being overweight. Obesity can cause you any and every health problem. Diabetes, heart disease, heart attacks, PCOS, asthma, cancer, arthritis, high blood pressure, chronic fatigue, kidney failure, gout, the list goes on and on. All of these problems can be related to obesity.
You might say to yourself, "Well, according to my doctor, I'm 30 lbs overweight, but my cholesterol, blood sugar, and blood pressure are all in check."
How old are you? Because when I was 19 I was 50 lbs overweight, and all my symptoms were in check.....because I was 19! It wasn't until I was diagnosed with PCOS that I got my wake-up call.
You can't be fat AND healthy. Nobody extremely overweight EVER lives a long time. It might be fine when you're a child, but when you start hitting 40, 50, 60, kiss your big ass goodbye, cuz you ain't gonna last long.
A few extra lbs, that's fine. Nobody's perfect. 30, 40, 50 extra lbs? That is NOT fine! You might think you're a big, beautiful woman, and there might be thousands of people that agree. But you're KILLING yourself over what your standard of beauty, meanwhile, you chastise people who eat too little, exercise too much, and are "too thin" because you think they're giving in to society's standards of beauty. You're both ignoring your health and shortening you lives over beauty.
What's the difference?
